Like a drinkable dairy cocktail, minus the hooch, a well-crafted milkshake is a thing to savour. These city establishments serve their own unique shake recipes in a long list of flavours from good old vanilla to exotic fruit concoctions.

Inglewood Drive In

1
802 12 Street Southeast, Calgary AB T2G 3H8

Go in and sit down, or visit the drive-through window at this tidy and terrific little diner in Inglewood. Its big ol’ burger combos pair exceedingly well with a selection from its milkshake menu. Flavours include hot fudge, bumbleberry, banana and licorice. In summer, walk your shake on down to the riverbank greenbelt and sip your icy drink on a tree-shaded bench.

Galaxie Diner

2
1413 11 St SW, Calgary AB T2R 1G7

An all-day eatery just southwest of downtown, petite Galaxy Diner often has line-ups out the door. A beautifully appointed ’50s-style diner, the best spot to enjoy one of its premium milkshakes is seated on one of its lunch-counter stools. Classic flavours available in regular and large include vanilla, strawberry and chocolate, but also consider the slightly more adventurous apple pie, coconut and coffee.

Dairy Lane Cafe

319 19 St NW, Calgary AB T2N 2J2

Just north of Kensington Road Northwest on 19th Street, Dairy Lane is a neighbourhood diner that has upscaled the classics, with local sustainable ingredients and a dose of Mexican flavour. Its milkshakes, however, remain old-school cool, in thick and rich strawberry, vanilla and chocolate.

My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe Ltd

4
2048 42 Ave SW, Calgary AB T2T 2M7

Both locations of this outstanding ice cream parlour serve milk shakes to match a lengthy list of cone flavours. My Favourite Ice Cream Shoppe offers a list 72 names long. Excluding its sherbets and sorbets, 64 of these are available as milkshakes. Flavours include peanut butter chocolate swirl, chocolate chip fudge and orange Creamsicle. Two sugar-free flavours are also available — caramel crunch and caramel macchiato.

Peters' Drive-In

5
219 16 Ave NE, Calgary AB T2E 1J9

A beloved drive-though burger joint that also features walkup windows, Peters’ Drive-In is located just west of the busy intersection of 16th Avenue Northwest and Edmonton Trail. Patrons often pair a burger and a massive order of fries with an ultra-thick Peters’ shake. Served large or small, you’re welcome to mix flavours that include vanilla, butterscotch, pineapple and toasted marshmallow.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended. The city’s pathway system is one of the longest in North America. Given its lengthy stretches, the occasional rest and snack stop, though few and far between, are a welcome sight when walking, biking and inline skating. Here are a few restaurants, cafés and snack shacks located on or near our scenic cycling system. Image credit: iStock.com/mihailomilovanovic.
