It may be tiny but Kensington Market’s Toronto Popcorn Company packs more mouthwatering flavours into 500 square feet than there are kernels in each bag.
Whether you're craving classic caramel, have a hankering for hot jalapenos, cupcakes, or a juicy watermelon, Toronto Popcorn Company offers a variety of sweet, savoury and gourmet flavours to tempt every taste bud.
“The very popular ones are Canadian inspired,” says owner Joseph Villegas. Maple bacon, bacon cheddar, and spicy bacon and cheddar fly off the shelf. His favourite flavour is pizza, followed up with a mouthful cookies and cream.
"Random quality control," he says with a smile.
Joseph, an engineer by trade, and his wife, a gourmet pastry chef, both from the Philippines, started the Toronto Popcorn Company in 2013, two years after they arrived in Canada. The first year saw the young couple popping up at festivals and fairs all over Toronto with their kettle corn maker. When demand called for a retail space in 2014 they opened shop and quickly became the kernel in Canada's popcorn scene.
“It was pretty much just a leap of faith," he says.
