“You can be a competent upholsterer, but to be really good. you need to be creative,” says Robby Simpson, owner of Robby’s Custom Upholstery since 1984. “You have to be able to take a look at a piece and enhance it.” This may mean questioning the client about the vision for their sofa or dining chairs, but Robby says it’s all worth it.

If he didn’t give his input based on being in the trade for decades, he wouldn’t feel like he was doing his job properly. “A customer may have their ideas and I listen to what they want, of course, because it’s their piece. But I sometimes know from my years of experience that to do things a little differently from what they have in mind will get the effect they are looking for. When my clients see my finished pieces they understand what I was driving at,” he says with a smile. “I take a lot of pride in this.”

    Robbie is a craftsman of exquisite skill. I have worked with him to reupholster a sofa in leather, chairs, and to build a sectional sofa from scratch at better value and quality than anything I could find on the market. I recommend him to everyone I know, and they are grateful.
