When Karen Ahlstrom graduated from NAIT’s culinary school in 1999, she and her mom, Rhonda, opened up a catering business in Sherwood Park. Eventually, they felt the need to branch out, so, in 2012, they opened Cobblestones Restaurant and Lounge. “I find it gives us a little bit more freedom than catering in that you can make your own menu and change things up at will,” says Karen. “I like to experiment in the kitchen. It’s fun to create new things.”
Cobblestones Restaurant and Lounge has built a loyal following, and Karen works hard to get to know her customers personally. “I like that every day is different. You never know what’s going to come at you,” she says. “I like dealing with people. It’s nice to hear feedback– good and bad – from people, and to get to know your regular customers.”
The atmosphere at this welcoming restaurant is calm and relaxed – there’s no need to shout over noisy music to hear your companion, and diners are encouraged to stay and chat. “We like to see people that come in and sit for two hours and have some coffee and a nice conversation with their friends,” says Karen. “I want people to feel comfortable enough that they want to stay awhile.”
